Mars 2020. L'épidémie de Covid s'étend à travers le monde et les populations sont appelées à se confiner. Le monde tourne (mal)Lenny Abramov vit dans un New York futuriste, image exagérée de notre époque mais qui lui ressemble étrangement : le monde entier est arrimé à son téléphone ultra-perfectionné, la publicité triomphe et la littérature est un art préhistorique que quelques inadaptés tentent de sauvegarder sans succès. Lenny fait partie de ceux-là. Il lit des " livres papier ", croit encore aux relations humaines et commet la folie de tomber amoureux d'Eunice Park, jeune américaine d'origine coréenne. Cette Super Triste Histoire d'amour est une comédie romantique qui finit mal (Lenny et Eunice ne vieilliront pas ensemble) et qui dresse un portrait accablant de la " modernité ". L'Amérique, au bord de l'effondrement économique, est menacée par ses créanciers chinois et une ambiance très Big Brother s'installe au quotidien. Cette satire mélancolique est surtout un roman à l'humour dévastateur. Sans délaisser la fable politique, Shteyngart livre ici un texte plus personnel, un autoportrait à peine déguisé d'un homme en décalage avec son temps.
